The 5 Best Homemaking Tips to Keep Life Simple

I am going to share my 5 best homemaking tips and ideas that keep things simple and moving forward in your home. They are probably not what you are thinking.

Homemaking? What does that even mean these days? Isn’t homemaking a relic of the past, overshadowed by the modern age of powerful women and evolving priorities?

Actually, homemaking is experiencing a renaissance. Women today are both forging new paths and reclaiming the ancient art of creating a home. With modern technology and timeless practices coexisting, homemaking has transformed into something dynamic, creative, and deeply satisfying.

In this post, I’ll share my favorite homemaking tips and ideas for building a home filled with warmth, peace, and purpose.

Homemaking Isn’t What It Used to Be

Homemaking today isn’t just about keeping house; it’s about creating an environment where everyone thrives. It’s satisfying to see how the little details—your efforts—bring comfort, joy, and even inspiration to your home.

If you’re anything like me, you grew up on black-and-white films with Donna Reed and picture-perfect portrayals of women who seemed to do it all with a smile. Today’s homemakers have swapped their pearls for tattoos and their aprons for muddy farm boots, and I absolutely love it!

Modern homemaking is a blend of masculine and feminine roles, with women taking on new skills and challenges. We’re building, growing, learning, and sharing like never before. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow us to connect, be inspired, and continuously grow in this art form.

Beware of the Perfect Pictures

While we’ve never had access to more resources or ideas, we’re also constantly bombarded with “perfection” online. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or start comparing yourself to others—and that rarely leads anywhere good.

Remember: homemaking isn’t about creating a picture-perfect house. It’s about creating a home where love, guidance, and creativity thrive. You set the tone every day for your family, and that is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Homemaking Tips and Ideas

Here are five ideas to keep homemaking simple and joyful while staying grounded in what matters most

1. Prioritize Self-Care

When you think about homemaking, tasks like cooking, cleaning, and laundry probably come to mind. And yes, those are part of it—but homemaking is about more than chores.

Self-care should be a homemaking essential. Taking time for yourself recharges you so you can serve your family from a place of energy and joy rather than burnout.

Self-care doesn’t have to mean spa days or big gestures. It can be as simple as doing something small that makes you feel good—like painting your nails, enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, or taking a walk. For me, doing my nails at home feels like a treat and boosts my confidence.

When you take care of yourself, everyone benefits.

2. Forget the Clock

One surprising tip? Stop living by the clock. So often, stress comes from trying to cram everything into a rigid schedule.

Instead, consider using a flexible framework for your day. Focus on rhythms and priorities rather than exact times. While some things—like appointments—require a schedule, much of your homemaking can happen at your own pace.

For example, I started wearing a simple watch instead of relying on clocks or smartphones. This way, I can transition between tasks without feeling tied to the clock, and my kids are less focused on “what time is it?” and more on the moment.

Letting go of the clock can bring unexpected peace to your home. You may find that a framework is a better tool than a schedule for you. Learn how to use one in this post.

3. Communicate Clearly

Good communication is a game-changer for homemaking. Sharing plans and expectations with your family prevents frustration and helps everything run more smoothly.

For example, I use a whiteboard in our kitchen to write a weekly dinner menu. It keeps my family in the loop and answers the eternal question: “What’s for dinner?”

For my younger kids, I create “happy lists” (simple chore charts) so they can complete their tasks independently.

Whether you use a whiteboard, charts, or a group chat, clear communication reduces confusion and helps everyone stay on the same page.

I want to encourage you to stay flexible and try different ways to communicate until you find one that is right for you and your family. Certain communications will work in one season and not in another, so stay open to how your family is changing and evolving.

4. Be Practical

Homemaking can feel fun and romantic in nature, but sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to find the right rhythm. Or you feel frustrated when the systems you put in place just aren’t working.

I can relate. I get so excited about organizing and creating new systems to make everything run smoothly that I forget my crew consists of individuals who are still developing into independent beings—aren’t we all, for that matter?

Shiny new systems and freshly organized spaces take time, patience, and a dose of practicality to establish. I have to remind myself that keeping the right perspective and allowing room for growth always pays off.

Take my oldest son, for example. He recently started making dinner for the family—glorious! He takes the initiative to plan the meal and gather ingredients. But this didn’t happen overnight. His knowledge didn’t come from a crash course.

It was years of investment in the kitchen—letting him experiment, make mistakes, and try again—that have paid off with delicious, well-planned meals appearing on our table. He’s blossoming into a well-rounded cook, and he takes great satisfaction in it.

This is no credit to anything but practicality, patience, and perspective. These qualities aren’t always easy to maintain when running a home, but they’re worth the effort.

I didn’t come to this conclusion on my own. I came across a video that reminded me to set aside frustration and continue investing in my home, even when the results take longer than I’d like.

5. Adjust Expectations

I’ll be honest—when my expectations aren’t met, no matter the scenario, a flood of emotions overtakes me, and I become someone I don’t like. Disappointment, regret, frustration, even anger—all of it sets in.

I’ve learned that my expectations, often unspoken, rarely align with reality. And when reality doesn’t meet them, those emotions take over the environment. Everyone feels it.

But when I adjust my expectations, I let go of the idealized picture in my head. I stop clinging to what I “think” should happen. And when I do, my stress melts away, and the whole household breathes easier.

I’m a work in progress, so I constantly check my expectations to see if they align with the reality of my home, my day, and my family’s actual skill level. It’s an ongoing, evolving process, but one that brings so much more peace to our home.

Final Thoughts

Homemaking is not about achieving perfection; it’s about creating a home where love, peace, and purpose thrive. It’s a mindset—not a skill set. When we focus on self-care, let go of time and rigid expectations, communicate clearly, and embrace healthy perspectives, we build homes that nourish both ourselves and the people we love.

These homemaking tips and ideas are simple, but can challenge the best of us. Give yourself space and grace to reflect and make the improvements necessary to bring joy to everyone. If you are new to homemaking or just need a fresh perspective, check out this post on basic homemaking skills.
