I started selling on Facebook Marketplace when my husband and I set a goal to pay off his truck. The note isn’t outrageous, but clearing it would give us more financial wiggle room.
As a work-from-home dad and a stay-at-home mom, we have flexibility—but we’re still busy. We needed a side income stream one or both of us could manage without shifting focus away from our family.
Selling on Facebook Marketplace checked every box:
- Low financial risk
- High potential return
- No special skills needed
- Easy for the whole family to help
In this post, I’ll share how I got started, what I love selling most, and how you can start selling on Facebook Marketplace as soon as you finish reading.

Getting Started Selling Something on Facebook Marketplace — Start With What You Have
If you’ve read any of my other posts, you already know I’m a big believer in using what you already have. This is a strategy that can save time, money, and energy in just about every area of life—and flipping is no different.
Most people think you need inventory to get started. But I began by selling furniture we already owned. No risk, no investment—just letting go of things we didn’t need and using the profits to buy new pieces.
Here’s why this method works:
- You can start today
- You quickly learn what sells in your local market
- Every dollar earned builds your flipping fund
Right now, this side hustle brings in about $30 a day—or $900+ a month—just by posting and flipping a few great pieces each week.
Why I Don’t Restore Furniture to Sell on Facebook Marketplace
Let me give it to you straight—here are my top 3 reasons I don’t restore furniture before selling:
- I don’t have the time
- I stink at it
- I don’t have the patience to do it right
Restoring furniture just doesn’t fit the framework of what I’m trying to do: pay off the truck note without sacrificing time with my family.
Finding great pieces that don’t need restoration is easier than you might think—especially if you check your local thrift stores consistently.
Why I Stick to a No-Restoration Approach:
- Restoration eats up time—and time is profit.
- Most buyers just want something clean, solid, and styled.
- You’ll burn out fast trying to be a flipper and a furniture refinisher.
Instead of working harder, I choose pieces in good condition that just need a wipe-down, a few photos, and a solid listing. It’s the best ROI for me.
What Sells Best on Facebook Marketplace
Some of my best sellers on Facebook Marketplace so far have been:
- Accent chairs
- Dining sets
- Coffee tables & side tables
Ironically, the pieces I think will fly out of inventory sometimes sit for weeks… and the little side table I almost didn’t buy? It sells the next day. It’s a guessing game—but that’s part of what makes it fun.
Try experimenting to figure out what works for you:
- What can you reasonably store?
- What do you already own that you could sell?
- Do you have space for larger pieces, or is small-scale better for now?
And while I focus on furniture, these same flipping principles apply to whatever you choose to sell.
Create a Rhythm for Selling Something on Facebook Marketplace
Like most platforms, Marketplace favors consistency, but I don’t have loads of time to spend on marketplace, so here is what I do.
One of the biggest drivers of my success is simply staying active. I try to post something new nearly every day—even if it’s just one item. When buyers see someone regularly posting, they’re more likely to reach out and trust you.
My Weekly Routine for Selling Something on Facebook Marketplace:
- I thrift 2–3 times a week (2 hours with driving time)
- I list new items 5–6 days a week (6 hours at most, including staging)
- Most weeks, I sell one or two large items—and a few smaller ones too
The more visible I am, the more DMs I get—even if they’re not about the exact item I posted. Momentum matters.
Standing Out in a Crowd: Why Your Photos Matter
One thing I realized early on: staging makes a huge difference—no matter who your buyer is.
When I came back to Marketplace after a few years, I noticed right away that my fast sales were tied to how well my photos were styled. The good news? It doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.
Quick Staging Tips:
- Create a go-to staging spot. Whether it’s a blank wall, a draped sheet, or old shutters, make it wide enough for most pieces and easy to access.
- Use simple lighting. I use a ring light, but even a lampshade removed from a basic lamp can work in a pinch.
- Add props that tell a story. I rotate through plants, books, candles, lamps, and blankets. Most of them are for sale too, but I keep a few staple items just for staging.
- Use your phone! Phones today capture better images than high-end cameras from 10 years ago. On an iPhone, switch to “rich contrast” for sharper, more vibrant listing photos.

The Heart Behind the Hustle
I started selling on Facebook Marketplace to pay off a truck note. But somewhere along the way, I discovered that I actually love the process. The hunt. The find. The staging. The “Is this still available?” message. And yes—the satisfying sound of a Venmo notification.
This isn’t just about making money. It’s about creating something that works—something that’s flexible, fast, and fulfilling. And it fits in the margins of real life.
