How to Post Items to Facebook in 5 Easy Steps

Learning how to post items on Facebook Marketplace can seem a bit intimidating at first, but with a few tips and tricks you can easily get started.

When I first started posting items on Facebook Marketplace, it was clunky and not very user-friendly. Thankfully, it has come a long way. With new technology and a smoother interface, posting items on Facebook Marketplace has never been easier.

In this post, I’ll walk you step-by-step through exactly how I post my items daily.

Step 1: Create a Facebook Profile

If you don’t already have a Facebook account, you’ll need to create one before you can post items on Facebook Marketplace. Fortunately, this process only takes a few minutes.

Once you have an account, you’ll be able to access Marketplace and start selling.

Step 2: Find Facebook Marketplace & “Create New Listing”

Navigate to Marketplace by clicking the storefront icon at the top of your Facebook homepage. This will take you to the Marketplace dashboard where you can browse items for sale or create your own listings.

On the left-hand side, click “Create New Listing.” This will open the page where you’ll begin creating your listing.

Step 3: Create a New Listing

On the listing page, you’ll see four options. I always choose “Item for Sale” when posting a single item in a common category.

Click the colorful teapot icon, and let’s get started.

Step 4: How to Fill Out Your Facebook Marketplace Listing

Photos & Video

Photos and videos are one of the most important parts of a great listing. This is where your item almost sells itself!

📸 Tips for Photos:

  • Take photos from all angles (front, side, back, top).
  • Show any flaws — this reduces back-and-forth questions.
  • Use natural light whenever possible.

Upload up to 10 photos and a short (30-second) video. Place your best photo first, and move flaw photos to the end. You can drag and drop to reorder them.

👉 Pro Tip: On iPhone, go to Settings > Camera > Grid (toggle on) and set Photographic Styles > Rich Contrast. This instantly improves your photos.

How to Write a Strong Title on Facebook Marketplace

Your listing title is just as important as your photos. It’s how people find your item in search.

❌ Bad Titles

  • Chair
  • Desk
  • Lamp
  • Rug

✅ Good Titles

  • Vintage Velvet Wingback Accent Chair
  • Solid Oak Antique Roll-Top Desk
  • Unique Hand-Painted Table Lamp with Original Shade
  • Large 9×12 Neutral Jute Area Rug

👉 Pro Tip: Don’t waste the title space with phrases like “Will not respond to ‘Is this available?’” Keep the focus on describing your item clearly.

How to Price Items on Facebook Marketplace

Pricing is completely up to you, but it’s wise to research similar items in your area before listing.

I live in a rural area and can’t always price as high as sellers in a metro area — but because I stage and photograph my items well, I still get strong sales. My personal rule is to make at least $20 profit per item.

👉 Pro Tip: Always leave room for negotiation so you still hit your profit goal.

Choosing a Category & Condition

Facebook usually suggests a category for your item, but if it doesn’t, choose the best fit.

For condition, be honest. I often select “Good Used Condition” because it’s clear and neutral.

Writing a Detailed Description

Your description should answer customer questions upfront. Include:

  • Measurements
  • Materials
  • Flaws and highlights
  • Styling suggestions

Here’s the exact format I use:

A charming vintage accent chair in a soft seafoam green upholstery that adds just the right touch of color to any room. The dark wood frame is highlighted with classic brass nailhead trim, giving this piece both character and elegance. Compact yet comfortable, it’s perfect for an accent corner, bedroom seating, or a cozy reading nook.

✨ Details:

  • Style: Vintage accent chair with nailhead trim
  • Upholstery: Soft seafoam green fabric
  • Frame: Dark wood with brass nailhead accents
  • Dimensions: 35” tall × 27” wide × 25” deep | 17” seat height
  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear

🤍 Pair With: A small side table or a mercury glass lamp for a polished, inviting look.
🏡 Clean, smoke-free, pet-friendly home
📍 Easy porch pickup (mention a nearby landmark here)
💵 Cash, Venmo, or Cash App accepted

👉 Pro Tip: Paste this format into ChatGPT, give a few item details, and let it generate a ready-to-use description.

Step 5: Final Fields Before Posting

After completing your photos, title, price, and description, you’ll see optional fields (I usually skip these). One setting I recommend checking is “Door Pickup” — this makes it clear you don’t meet in public places.

If everything is filled in, the Next button will turn blue. When you click it, your listing will go live. If you belong to selling groups, you can also check up to 20 groups, and the item will post there as well as Marketplace.

Now You Know How to Post Items on Facebook Marketplace!

That’s it! You’ve successfully learned how to post items on Facebook Marketplace.

If you’re not ready to publish right away, save your listing as a draft and come back later. I like to batch photos for 5–10 items at once, create listings, then save them as drafts so I can post one a day throughout the week.

Now that you know how to post items on Facebook Marketplace, what will you list first? Share in the comments below — or drop your questions if something didn’t work for you.
